Introduction:

The novel “Lord of the Flies” was written by the English author William Golding and published in 1954. It deals with a group of British schoolboys who are stuck on an island and try to rescue themselves with fatal results.

Summary:

British schoolboys, who are the only survivors of the crashed airplane, are stranded on a lonely island. In order to recreate their culture they elect one of the boys, named Ralph, as their new leader. As a matter of fact other boys, e.g. Jack, want to reign as well. As a result two factions form. On the one hand, the group of Ralph insists on building shelters and collecting food. On the other hand, jack’s group would rather have fun and go hunting. The growing competition and the decreasing chance of being rescued lead to the death of Simon and Piggy.

What I liked, and why?

I appreciated reading the book because the language style was easy to ready and understand. Furthermore, the language was very illustrated and you could imagine how the boys behave based on pictures in your mind.

What I didn’t like, and why?

In my opinion the end was very surprising. I did not expect that the boys would kill each other. I assumed that a cruel event would happen, but not the death of two boys because of brainless reasons.

What I would change?

I suggest shortening the first half of the novel, because it is a description of the settings and the boys. The importance and tension increases in the last half. This is what you will keep in mind

Which book would you like to read next?

I would like to read “The catcher in the rye” written by J.D. Salinger. The novel deals with the protagonist, Holden Caulfield, who was expelled from his Prep. school. I always wanted to read the novel but never had the chance. It is a great opportunity to do it now.

Conclusion:

In my opinion the “Lord of the flies” is an interesting book and I enjoyed reading it. Although some parts were unamusing and the end surprising. Furthermore, I appreciate the style the novel was written because it was mostly easy to read, understandable and vivid.

Maine- The Pine Tree State

Maine:

Maine is located in the northeastern United States surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, New Hampshire and Canada. The state is inhabited by 1,5 Million people, most of whom live in the capital, Augusta, or the largest City, Portland. Due to the fact that 90% of the state is covered by forest, it has the obvious nickname, the Pine Tree state.

Economy:

For the simple reason that Maine is bordered by the Atlantic and accommodates a lot of waters, it uses it to provide electricity. Moreover, it is known for commercial fishing such as Lobsters.

Landscape:

The landscape is characterized by rugged coastlines, beaches, fishing villages, offshore islands and the typical lighthouses. In addition to that it is famous for outdoor activities such as hunting, fishing, boating and skiing.

Acadia National Park:

This special national park is a must see if you are visiting Maine. Besides exploring the beautiful Flora& Fauna with almost extinct species, such as wolves, you can have the best time of your life while camping in this park. However, you are not alone there because 2 Million people each year come to see the amazing wildlife of Maine.

Introduction:

The aim of this report is to analyze the importance of our daily life use sweetener such as sugar. Moreover it contains the influence on our health and therefore causes diseases such as Alzheimer.

History of sugar:

Sugar has been produced since ancient times. The first historical references had shown that sugar syrup was manufactured from sugarcane plantations were growing and technologies for sugar-refining was developed more and more until contemporary standardized methods became prominent.

Influence on our health:

Sugar, the “sweet poison”, is not only a normal ingredient in our recipes, but it can cause a large variety of critical consequences on our health. It may suppress the immune system and can cause arthritis, asthma and heart diseases. Moreover, it lowers the amount of vitamin E in the blood, decreases growth hormones and contributes to diabetes. In addition to that it can cause depression, headache and increase the amount of liver fat. In contrast our body needs a healthy amount of sugar to obtain energy.

Consumption:

Sugar is an important part of the worldwide human food balance. Even though sugar should be treated as a luxury, Studies have shown that 24kg of sugar are consumed each day per person of all ages in the world since 1999. Consequently, because of rising human population the consumption is expected to grow.

Conclusion:

All in all we have to respect sugar as other spices like salt and pepper. Otherwise our body will struggle with the serious consequences such as obesity, diabetes or Alzheimer’s.

Introduction:

In the following days a special project about Aliens and UFOs will enrich not just your knowledge but your entire stay.

The place:

The EF campus is suitable for this event because people within their diffeent culktures convene. As a result, ideas and thoughts about unidentified flying objects and extra-terrestrial beings can be shared and great discussions will rise.

E.T.:

Furthermore, a trip to the cinema in order to watch the movie, E.T., which was directed by Steven Spielberg, will be offered. Besides this, you can attend lessons about life on other planets and the existence of other creatures in our milkyway.

Experts:

Moreover, Experts with specialized knowledge will attend this event. They will be available for personal questions regarding the mystery of Aliens and UFOs.

Conclusion:

The result of this event is to discover the unknown world of Aliens. In addition to this, the students will gain a lot of new information and can participate in a play, whoch they create and perform by themselves.

Between child mortality and a life in abundance

Did you know that German people are wasting a dramatically high number of food? One person about 85kg = 187lbs. each year. You can feed a whole town in Burundi (Central Africa) from that garbage. As a result about half of the children, between 0 until 5 years old, would die because of hunger. In contrast we are living our life full of high-tech houses with big swimming-pools in the garden complaining about our biggest problem nowadays time and money while little kids in African bushes dieing because of HIV.

My secret ambition is to become a doctor in Burundi and help the people to be freed from slavery, oppression and hunger. The country is located in Central Africa, close to the Sahara. Life us very harsh there and water is very difficult to find. In addition the air is very dry and sandstorms are no great rarity.

Some important facts to mention are that the child mortality is around 62 from 1000 kids born in the year 2011.

In contrast to emphasize the dramatic situation, in the USA the number is 6 from 1000 born children. Furthermore the concentration of doctors working there is terrifyingly small. About 0,03 physician for 1000 inhabitants. In opposite to the United Nations there are about 3 doctors for 1000 citizen.

As you can see Burundi needs our help to develop first a good infrastructure in order to travel around. That way if there is an emergency a physician can immediately be at the place. Moreover, you need electricity and running water to enhance the life status. Besides this you need to build schools in order to facilitate education for children e.g. to plant their fruits and vegetables.

My secret ambition is to become a doctor and to settle down there, start projects to encourage the people for a better life. IN this case you need, beside excellent knowledge about medicine and the human body, to also know about culture in order to understand people’s behavior.

Airplanes- a modern day issue?

Ever since mankind was born, people dreamt of flying. This entire time people could never imagine being 10000km above the ground, sitting in a winged vehicle capable of flight, generally heavier than the air and Vehicles driven by jet engines and propellers with the speed of 800km/h.
If you lived back in this time what would you do if you did not have the chance to fly? How would you manage to travel to different countries in a short period of time? What if nobody ever invented the airplane? Would you take the car, bus or train instead?
Blessedly the Wright Brothers invented the first motorized airplane in 1903. From then on the whole airplane industry developed. Thousands of people are now employed in this industry and for us it is normal to embark in Europe and be at a show in San Francisco eight hours later. That's fantastic and I believe that none of you will ever let this technical advantage go!
If you are planning your holiday, you think about travel destinations like Bali, Australia, Madagascar and so on. You either go to a travel agency or on the Internet and search for the cheapest flight. There are at least 1000 different airlines from which you can choose. You have to have a knack for choosing the right one. Otherwise you will spend a whole weekend in a hotel close to the airport where nothing else is built, just because your flight was delayed. You get angry because you want to be in time in a certain area.
Did you ever imagine how much the airline has to pay for it? To check in 400 people in a normal standard hotel, with food and shuttle back to the airport. One quarter that you paid for your ticket is going there. Furthermore if the flight is delayed more than ten hours you can receive around $700 from the airline as remuneration.
In contrast did you ever consider the negative side of the airplane industry? Of course airplanes can carry a few hundred people at the same time and by doing this they can decrease the CO2 emission. But not just people are transported in modern daily life. Fruits, post, cars, animals are also transported by flight. It is faster to fly mangos from Brazil to Russia. The out packing ways are enormous, about millions of km at one day, and consequently they have a dramatically impact on the greenhouse effect. A solution is if you are going to a supermarket the next time just buy food from your own country. The next time you are embarking into an airplane think about all these issues that are going along with it!
